THE BACK STORY

Joining a plein-air painting group for
a weekend of venturing around Santa Barbara/California/USA. Devereux
Lagoon is found as a Pacific Ocean tidal area near the grounds of the
University of CA.

During
this adventure we gathered around expert plein-air painter Gay ____ watching
her oil painting style. I took away many helpful concepts, like painting a
white canvas a one transparent color before beginning the actual painting. I
like Yellow Ochre which you can see in this landscape; other times I love to
begin with a canvas of “fire engine” red.

This
painting day began with me in tears because I was not comfortable painting
around other artists. I find myself my extremely critical of my abilities
especially around artists I consider “better” than myself.  A wise sage said to me once, when I expressed
this thought/feeling, “ OH WELL! ” You’ve gotta love that type of simplicity.
