TITLE: PASSING OF THE SPIRITS
FROM THE SCAFFOLDING IN THE BAD LANDS
In the Bad Lands Of South Dakota, around 2001 near the Pine Ridge Reservation, I accompanied several locals along a less frequently travel trail. At the crest of one rise, we came upon the scuffling seen in my painting. I was overwhelmed with the energy I felt coming from the structure. Sitting down beneath it, I felt an immediate bonding with a power beyond myself. I saw pure energy shooting up in waves with sparkling white swirls rapidly ascending like something from a movie. Before leaving I snapped a photo. Later when looking at the photo, I realized I had captured what I had experienced. I share that image with you in this special painting.

THE BACK STORY
TITLE: CALIFORNIA BURNING
This painting began as a simple landscape using a slow drying acrylic paint. While placing my plein air supplies in my vehicle, I dropped the painting face down in a sandy parking lot. Spotting someone with a huge jug of water, I rushed over asking if I could wash off my painting. What evolved was the undried paint washing off leaving the under paints. And immediately my simple landscape became CALIFORNIA BURNING.
With the traumas of fires and destruction in the Los Angeles area, this painting, to me, evokes the overwhelming fear of seeing fires just beyond the next ridge.

THE BACK STORY
TITLE: I FIND MYSELF IN A BUBBLE
EARLY TITLE: LEARNING TO BE ME THRU THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN
I have never been shown in public before this newsletter. Painted in 1978, five years after moving to L.A. from LA. I was caught in an abusive marriage, had lost two babies and had no support system other than my paints. Finding myself alone most of the time in a place that seemed like another planet, a world with little to no moisture nor rain, I withdrew into myself and my only known means of communicating… a visual world of paint.

Pre-made circle stretcher bars did not exist then, so I make my own.
