THE BACK STORY
TITLE: GRIEVING THE LOSS OF HIS BELOVED
One of a 6 part suite once commissioned by a distant DNA relative and which has been accepted into several juried exhibitions, including 2 in the 2025’s 23rd Japan International Art Exchange curated by Julienne Johnson at the TOKYO METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART. This particular gentleman is the grandfather of my paternal grandfather who originally immigrated from his birth country of Belarus to England. Ghosting his right and left are hints of two of his children after the loss of their anchor, the wife and mother.

THE BACK STORY
TITLE: WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF OUR DNA
Curated by Julienne Johnson of Los Angeles at the TOKYO METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART my new series is a contemporary take on a suite of work begun in the 1970s. It focuses on photos of people in the 19th and early 20th century. This resurrected style, phase 2025, began again after finding a photo of a “wet nurse” for the Louisiana Geismar family. I did not want her life to be forgotten. To accomplish the feeling of the old painting I chose to paint on Linen using Sepia tone paints. This additional new work is created on raw, clear gessoed, linen with sepia tone paint and gold leaf. I also use hand-made earth tones from dirt collected from my world travels. “Try explaining that to customs!” The painting on the left is of 2 great aunts on the Segal side of my family which I knew very little about. The child with the halo died shortly after the photo. The old gentleman on the right is my father’s great-grand father or in other words my grand-father’s grand-father.

Certificate Award/I’ve never tried a still life before. I went to a paint demo at my fav. art supply store. Everyone, of course, painting a still life. For the first few minutes I actually felt intimidated, until the brain “click” took over and I was immersed in my comfort zone of shape, color, light and reflections.
